The WeCode team recently visited the Museum of Malware Art (MuMA) in Helsinki, an innovative and interactive museum dedicated to exploring the fascinating history of computer malware. Guided by two expert museum docents, the participants enjoyed an immersive experience, gaining insights into the origins, historical contexts, and significant impacts of computer viruses through engaging and interactive exhibitions.

Opened in November 2024, MuMA is recognized as the world’s first museum focusing exclusively on the artistic representations of malware. Visitors from WeCode explored dynamic exhibits highlighting the evolution and artistic interpretation of malicious software, gaining a deeper understanding of cybersecurity issues in today’s increasingly digital world.
Among the museum’s most intriguing exhibits was the “ILOVEYOU” installation, artistically crafted from numerous donated computer mice. This exhibit vividly represented the infamous “ILOVEYOU” virus, which caused global disruptions when it emerged in May 2000, reminding visitors of the tangible impacts of malware beyond the digital sphere.
Interactive elements at MuMA allowed the WeCode visitors to actively experience the history of prominent cyber threats and understand their real-world consequences. These exhibits offered not just historical insights but encouraged thoughtful discussions about the intersection of technology, art, and society.
The Museum of Malware Art continues to offer an engaging, educational experience, contributing significantly to public awareness and conversation around digital security. WeCode’s visit highlighted the importance of creative and immersive approaches to cybersecurity education, demonstrating how art and interactivity can bring complex technological issues closer to the community.
