Introduction:
Welcome to the WeCode Platform (WeCode ry) is a Finland-based association that provides educational resources and expert guidance to the IT Professionals and individuals who want to break into the IT field. The WeCode Platform has been operating under the FinPolar Association for the past five years. After successfully completing this period, we established WeCode Ry in January 2025.
On our website, you can discover a plethora of events and insightful articles contributed by our esteemed authors. Our diverse range of expertise spans various IT disciplines, including Software Development, Web Development, UI/UX Design, Mobile Development, Data Engineering, Data Science/Machine Learning, Educational Technology, and Cybersecurity.
One of our core offerings is a series of engaging and informative seminars known as IT Talks. These talks cover a wide range of IT-related topics and are conducted online, providing accessibility to all interested individuals. Best of all, our IT Talks and other training programs are entirely free of charge, as we believe in the importance of equitable access to knowledge and skills development.
Furthermore, the WeCode Platform provides guidance and mentoring projects aimed at facilitating vocational orientation within the IT sector. We understand the value of mentorship and strive to provide a supportive environment for individuals seeking to explore career opportunities in the field.
Activities:
Networking event: In January, the WeCode community gathered for a warm and interactive event that offered both valuable insights and meaningful connections for 60 participants. The day began with a welcoming spread of refreshments, setting the stage for an engaging session. The event kicked off with an introduction to WeCode, where attendees learned about the platform’s mission and ongoing initiatives. This was followed by a ‘meet and greet’ segment, allowing participants to share their personal journeys and experiences across various IT fields. The session fostered a sense of community and highlighted the diverse expertise of attendees.
IT Talks: In February, we hosted an interactive IT Talks event with a fresh approach, encouraging active participation from all attendees. The discussion centered around the latest developments in Artificial Intelligence (AI), examining its evolution and the impact it has had on individuals in the IT field over the recent years. We explored whether AI represents a threat or an opportunity for current professionals and discussed the potential business applications it has unlocked. The evening concluded with personal anecdotes shared by participants, sparking further reflection. This event marks the beginning of our ongoing efforts to facilitate engaging, thought-provoking discussions on relevant topics.
Retreat program: From March 1st to 3rd, members of the WeCode group gathered for a two-day retreat in the peaceful setting of Padasjoki. The retreat blended relaxation with productive brainstorming sessions, where key topics such as expanding collaboration with volunteer platforms, planning the ‘WeCode IT Talks,’ and renewing the WeCode website were discussed. A major highlight was the presentation of the STEA Project, outlining a detailed action plan to make a significant impact in IT education. The group also committed to offering IT courses and enhancing support for those seeking employment in the IT sector. This retreat marked an important step forward in WeCode’s mission and future plans.
Networking and training event: In April, Startup Refugees and WeCode Platform hosted a successful networking and training event at Kumpula Common Space in Helsinki, designed for 30 IT professionals and aspiring developers from immigrant backgrounds. The event featured valuable training sessions on web development, full-stack development, software, and mobile app development, led by industry experts. Attendees also received career coaching and insights into the Finnish job market. Beyond education, the event provided a platform for networking and community building, promoting connections among professionals. The positive feedback reflects the event’s success in empowering participants with the knowledge and resources to thrive in Finland’s IT sector.
IT Talks: In May, WeCode Platform hosted an insightful IT Talk program on AI, aimed at guiding participants interested in pursuing a career in this rapidly evolving field. Led by Zeynel Abidin Karadis, the presentation covered key topics such as the definition of AI, its relationship with data science and machine learning, and the structured approach for AI developers. Attendees learned about various AI career paths, including roles like Data Scientist, Machine Learning Engineer, and NLP Engineer, and were given valuable tips on building a professional profile, including essential programming skills and the importance of project-based learning. The session provided practical advice and highlighted emerging opportunities in the AI sector.
Meeting with IT professionals: On May 23, WeCode Platform hosted a successful in-person meeting in Finland for 30 IT professionals, beginning with a relaxed breakfast that fostered networking. The event featured presentations from attendees, allowing them to share their professional backgrounds and exchange experiences across various IT fields, including software development, cybersecurity, and data analytics. Key discussions focused on job interviews and challenges in the IT job market, with participants offering practical advice. The meeting concluded with brainstorming sessions on future workshops, aimed at addressing specific IT topics. Overall, the event emphasized the importance of networking, knowledge exchange, and ongoing collaboration within the IT community.
Mentorship program: In August, WeCode hosted an engaging event at the Lippulaiva Library, starting with an introduction to the platform’s mission and activities. In total, 40 attendees enjoyed traditional Turkish baklava before listening to an insightful presentation by Lidiia Salo on “30 Mistakes While Looking for a Job.” The session was followed by an interactive Q&A with recruitment experts Leo Heydon and Lancelot Johansson-Stockford, who addressed key questions on the IT job market. The event concluded with an informal discussion, offering participants the chance to share experiences and network. It was a successful blend of professional development and cultural appreciation.
Breakfast with IT professionals: In October, WeCode Platform hosted an impactful event that brought together IT professionals and aspiring individuals in the field. The day began with a welcoming open buffet breakfast, offering a chance for participants to connect and expand their networks. A lively discussion followed, focusing on career experiences, working conditions, and personal development within Finland’s IT sector. The challenges faced by job seekers, particularly overcoming language barriers, were highlighted, with an emphasis on the importance of Finnish and English skills. The event also included discussions on future WeCode initiatives, collaborations, and strategic goals. The gathering concluded with the announcement that WeCode will continue as a formal association, committed to supporting IT professionals. Overall, the event was a valuable opportunity to share insights, strengthen community ties, and inspire future endeavors.
Training events: In November and December, WeCode Platform hosted two successful training events. The first event, held in November, focused on Cyber Security Awareness, attracting 30 participants. The session provided valuable insights into online safety practices, risk management, and protecting personal and professional data. In December, we hosted a second training on “AI in Daily Use,” which saw 40 participants. This session explored how AI is integrated into everyday life, from virtual assistants to AI-powered applications, offering practical examples and discussions on its impact. Both events provided participants with hands-on knowledge and skills, further enhancing their professional development in these key areas.
Achievements:
WeCode Platform has made significant strides in fostering a strong community of IT professionals and aspiring talents. Challenges:
Despite the progress made, the WeCode Platform has faced several challenges in its journey. One of the key obstacles has been addressing the language barrier for job seekers in Finland’s IT sector, as proficiency in both Finnish and English is often required. Additionally, attracting a wider audience to our events and ensuring that participants can fully benefit from them remains an ongoing challenge. Another challenge has been coordinating collaborations and strategic partnerships to expand our reach and impact. As we continue to grow, overcoming these hurdles will be essential in providing even greater support to our community and ensuring that WeCode remains a valuable resource for IT professionals and aspiring talents.
Future plans:
Looking ahead, WeCode Platform is focused on expanding its resources and opportunities through strategic partnerships and funding. One of our key goals is to secure grants from Finnish organizations as well as from the European Union to support our initiatives and ensure the long-term sustainability of our programs. These grants will help fund specialized training sessions, workshops, and events, enabling us to further support IT professionals and aspiring talents. Additionally, WeCode plans to strengthen collaborations with local companies and volunteer platforms, enhance our digital presence, and continue offering valuable career guidance and mentorship. With these plans in place, WeCode aims to create even more impactful opportunities for the IT community in Finland and beyond.
